The
Duncan Ranch offers as naturally diverse a collection of wildlife
species as anywhere in the state of Texas. In addition to top
quality Pronghorn Antelope, the mixed terrain is excellent habitat for
thriving populations of Trophy Mule and Whitetail Deer. Feral
Pigs, Wild Turkey, and Ring Neck Pheasant rove the creek bottoms, while
the highland hills and broken canyons provide prime habitat in an area
renown for the best Blue and Bobwhite quail hunting in the country.
These uplands are also home for the rare Prairie Chicken. Playa
lakes and earthen tanks provide watering areas for an abundant
population of Dove, and the beaver dams and spring fed lakes of the
lowlands provide migratory lay over areas for Sandhill Cranes, Canadian Geese, and
Snow Geese, as well as making a year around home for healthy population
of wild ducks.
The
plentiful game species aren't the only hunting opportunities on The
Duncan Ranch. Varmint hunters have ample chances as well.
Coyotes, Bobcats, and Cougar are the primary land predators of the area.
While Porcupine, Racoon, Skunk, Red Fox, Armadillo, and Opossum can score
points in varmint hunts as well.
Fishing
is another popular sport on the ranch. White Deer Creek and the
spring fed lakes on The Duncan Ranch provide excellent game fishing for
Large Mouth Bass, Hybrid Bluegill, Rock Bass, and Sunfish. Not to
mention large Chanel and Mud Catfish.
Birder's
have enjoyed The Duncan Ranch for generations. It is not uncommon
to see Blue Heron, Bald Eagles, and Mississippi Kite's hunting the
bottomlands, or Golden Eagles, Red-Tail Hawks, and Great Horned Owls hunting the
plains. Both hunting and song birds abound from the tall cottonwoods along the
creek to the brush of the highlands.
This rare diversity is the product of careful management of The Duncan Ranch's wildlife resources. This fragile balance is in the mind of every management decision we make here at the ranch and we are proud to say that in almost every case, the wildlife here at The Duncan Ranch are both more abundant and more diverse than they were when R.A. and Frank Duncan first purchased the beginnings of the ranch back in the 1930's. And with careful management we are confident that this rich habitat will continue to improve for generations to come.~
